Day 1: Tea Fragrance in the Mountains & Indigenous Heritage

Depart from Taipei ➔ Alishan

Must-try treats include classic bento boxes in tin lunchboxes, freshly baked century-old cypress donuts, handmade herbal rice cakes (Cao Zai Guo), and wild hand-rubbed Aiyu jelly. The absolute crown jewel of the park! Walk among dozens of majestic Formosan red cypress trees, many of which have stood for centuries or even over a thousand years. Looking up at these giants towering tens of meters into the sky before taking the forest train back from Shenmu Station lets you feel the grandeur of nature, with air rich in therapeutic cypress phytoncides.

Day 3: A Cultural & Craft Tour of Chiayi City

Hinoki Village

The most complete surviving Japanese-style wooden official dormitories in Taiwan, originally built during the Japanese era for Alishan logging operations using solid Alishan cypress (Hinoki). The entire village radiates a rich cypress aroma, featuring Kyoto-esque wooden architecture, indie craft shops, and local gifts. Flat and easy to walk, it's perfect for photos, relaxing walks, and picking up unique Taiwanese souvenirs.

Chiayi Old Prison

The only fully preserved Japanese-era "Pennsylvania-style" radial prison architecture remaining in Taiwan, and a recognized national historic monument. Key highlights include the central control tower, high-walled cellblocks, and intricate wooden framing. It offers an intellectually engaging, historically resonant contrast to natural scenery.

Xin-Gang Incense Art Cultural Park

Taiwan’s first cultural park themed around the art of traditional incense-making, elevating traditional worship incense into a refined lifestyle craft. Handy Tips & Considerations:

• Evaluate Mobility & Terrain: Trails inside Alishan National Forest Recreation Area consist mainly of stone paths, slopes, and stairs. For families traveling with seniors with limited mobility or young kids in strollers, pace yourselves and make good use of the park’s electric shuttle buggies.
• Park Traffic Restrictions: Outside private vehicles are strictly prohibited inside the Alishan Forest Recreation Area. Transport inside relies entirely on walking, electric shuttle buggies, or the forest train.
• Private Charter Highly Recommended: Alishan is located deep in the high mountains. While there is a forest train from Chiayi Station to Fenqihu, daily tickets are extremely limited and hard to book. To ensure a comfortable ride for older family members and maximum flexibility, booking a private chartered car service is strongly advised.
