Sisters Ponds
Sisters Ponds! This is the most romantic and mysterious spot in the forest recreation area. Whether it’s the natural scenery or the folklore behind it, it’s absolutely worth exploring! Time for a story from the editor~
Legend has it that a long, long time ago, two sisters who were very close fell in love with the same man (this plot isn't exclusive to soap operas, you know). To avoid hurting each other, the sisters chose to jump into the lake, transforming into what we now know as Elder Sister Pond and Younger Sister Pond. Sounds a bit bittersweet, doesn’t it? But it’s precisely this story that has made Sisters Ponds a famous romantic attraction~
Magnolia Garden
Magnolia Garden is located within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, a spot full of poetic and romantic vibes. During spring, magnolia flowers bloom in abundance, with their pure white blossoms adorning the branches like snow, forming a mesmerizing sea of white flowers that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale world~
Originally, Magnolia Garden was a deer park for sika deer. Later, the Forestry Bureau planted a large number of magnolia trees here and renamed it "Magnolia Garden." Today, the area is a hub for magnolia flowers, featuring various species such as southern magnolia, purple magnolia, and Japanese magnolia. Each season showcases a different beauty, but especially in spring, the white magnolia flowers decorating the mountains create a romantic and enchanting scene.
The garden also features a forest bathing trail winding through the magnolia trees. Walking along the trail, you can hear the gentle rustling of the wind through the treetops and catch the faint fragrance of magnolia flowers in the air. Here, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll find only the serene sounds of nature, offering a chance to truly relax and connect with the natural world.
Shou Zhen Temple
Shou Zhen Temple, located in Xianglin Village, Alishan Township, Chiayi County, is the largest temple in the Alishan area and a must-visit attraction for travelers. It is rich in history and cultural significance, blending natural scenery with architectural beauty, leaving visitors in awe.
The temple enshrines Xuantian Shangdi (the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven), Fude Zhengshen (the Earth God), and Zhusheng Niangniang (the Birth Goddess). It serves as a faith center for locals, with vibrant religious activity. During the birthday celebration of Xuantian Shangdi on the third day of the third lunar month, the temple becomes bustling with devotees and tourists. Interestingly, this period coincides with the breeding season of the unique "Brahmaea wallichii insulata" moths in Alishan, also known as "divine butterflies." These moths, with wingspans reaching 15 cm, have eye-like patterns on their wings and are considered spiritual symbols by locals. The fusion of legend and natural spectacle makes Shou Zhen Temple a vibrant spiritual hub.
Shou Zhen Temple is more than just a place of worship; it is a harmonious blend of faith, nature, and historical culture. It offers a serene retreat from the city's hustle and bustle, allowing visitors to find peace and create cherished memories. Whether you're a devotee or a tourist, Shou Zhen Temple is a must-visit spot to truly experience the beauty of Alishan!
The Highest Academy|Xianglin Elementary School
Established in 1947, Xianglin Elementary School was initially created to serve the children of forestry workers in Alishan. Situated within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area at an altitude of approximately 2,100 meters, it is an important center for Tsou culture in Alishan. The school integrates Tsou traditions into its curriculum, allowing students to learn not only general subjects but also traditional Tsou music, dance, and language, preserving the cultural essence of the indigenous people.
As a tourist attraction, Xianglin Elementary School offers both educational significance and stunning views. Visitors can explore the school’s history while enjoying the breathtaking mountain scenery and forest trails. The stone plaque at the school’s entrance, engraved with the words "The Highest Academy," has become a popular photo spot.
Thousand-Year Cypress
The Thousand-Year Cypress is one of the most iconic attractions in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area and a natural wonder that all visitors must see. This majestic red cypress is over a thousand years old, symbolizing Alishan as the "elder of the forest." Estimated to be 1,200 to 1,500 years old, it is the oldest and most intact giant tree in the Alishan region. Towering high into the sky, with a trunk diameter exceeding 5 meters and intricately intertwined roots, it has endured centuries of natural elements.
Legend holds that the Thousand-Year Cypress is the dwelling of mountain spirits, revered by the Tsou people as a sacred tree. They conduct regular ceremonies to honor the tree, seeking peace and prosperity. The tree’s aged trunk, marked by the passage of time, tells countless stories of Alishan’s history.
Tree Spirit Pagoda
The Tree Spirit Pagoda in Alishan, Chiayi County, is a structure steeped in mystery and historical significance. It serves as a testament to Alishan’s logging era and embodies humanity’s reverence and reconciliation with nature.
The pagoda was built in 1935 during the Japanese colonial period when massive logging of Alishan’s thousand-year-old sacred trees was underway. As logging progressed, workers reportedly experienced a series of strange incidents, such as injuries, illnesses, and accidents. Locals believed the spirits of the sacred trees were unsettled and suggested constructing a pagoda to appease these spirits, restore harmony, and alleviate grievances.
The Tree Spirit Pagoda, modest yet solemn in appearance, is built from red cypress, exuding a natural aura. Inside, fragments of the felled sacred trees are said to be stored, symbolizing respect and repentance toward the forest.
This pagoda is not just a historical landmark but also a part of Alishan’s forestry story. It reminds visitors of the importance of coexistence with nature. Today, the Tree Spirit Pagoda is a place of reflection and gratitude, where many visitors come to pray for peace and give thanks for nature’s blessings.
Xiang-lin Shen-mu
When you come to Alishan, you'll definitely hear the name "Xiang-lin Shen-mu"! This sacred tree is no ordinary tree; it is the "treasure of the mountain" in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area! Its magnificent trunk and long history truly leave people in awe~
In fact, the Xiang-lin Shen-mu was originally named "Guangwu Cypress," a name given by the former Taiwan Provincial Chairman, Huang Jie. Quite impressive, right? Why "Guangwu"? Because the time when this sacred tree sprouted coincided with the reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty's Emperor Guangwu! Isn't that amazing? In 2007, to commemorate the first generation Alishan Sacred Tree (which is no longer around), this tree was officially named the "Xiang-lin Shen-mu," becoming the second generation Alishan Sacred Tree in people's hearts!
Merit Monument
Alishan not only has beautiful natural landscapes but also contains stories full of history. The Merit Monument here silently tells the story of those who worked hard on this land, allowing us to glimpse the past glory.
Dr. Kinoshita Heiwa, a forestry scholar from the Japanese colonial era, can be considered one of the pioneers in the development of Alishan. At that time, he made significant contributions to the forestry planning and development of Alishan, as well as to the construction of the Alishan Railway. Without his efforts, the development of Alishan might have been quite different. Later, people erected this monument in his honor to commemorate his great contributions. In 2009, this monument was designated as a county-level historical site, becoming one of Alishan's important cultural assets. Every year, many tourists and scholars come here to visit and learn about this history. In fact, this monument not only commemorates Dr. Kinoshita but is also part of Alishan's development history, allowing us to better appreciate and understand this land.
Ciyun Scenic Spot
When you come to Alishan, you must not miss the Ciyun Temple Scenic Spot, which is an excellent location to view the sunrise, sea of clouds, and sunset. It is also the essence of Alishan's scenery~ Why do I recommend the Ciyun Temple Scenic Spot? First of all, its geographical location is super advantageous! Located within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, it is at a high elevation, offering a very broad view. From the scenic platform, you can not only see the Alishan settlement and Tashan but also enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery around. It’s really a place to open your mind. Also, it's very convenient to get to from the Alishan station, so whether you're on a short trip or a long stay in Alishan, this spot is an excellent choice for sightseeing~
Additionally, the charm of Ciyun Temple lies in its diverse landscapes. Whether it’s the sunrise in the early morning, the spectacular sea of clouds, or the stunning sunset with brilliant evening glow, Ciyun Temple always leaves you in awe. I’ve been there a few times, and each visit leaves me amazed by the natural beauty, especially during sunrise, when the sun rises slowly from the mountains, shining brightly—it’s truly an indescribable beauty~
Fragrant Forest Arch Bridge
The Fragrant Forest Arch Bridge is located within the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area and is one of the well-known attractions of Alishan. This bridge is famous for its red arch design and wooden structure, which blends perfectly with the surrounding natural scenery. The arch bridge spans across a stream, with clear flowing water and lush greenery below. Whether you're taking a walk or taking photos, it’s a great spot!
Alishan 2-Day Tour Itinerary|Day 2: Sunrise Scenery and Cultural Depth Experience
Zhushan Sunrise Viewing
The sunrise at Alishan has always been one of Taiwan's most iconic natural landscapes. If you want to experience the most classic sunrise in Alishan, you must not miss the Zhushan Sunrise Viewing. This place is not only a popular spot for watching the sunrise, but also one of the most visited tourist attractions in Alishan. Whether you are a photography enthusiast or a regular traveler, you can capture the most beautiful moment of the sunrise here. The Zhushan line is a hiking trail designed specifically for tourists to enjoy the sunrise at Alishan. Starting from Alishan Station, you will walk along a small path filled with the fresh air of the forest, all the way to the Zhushan Viewing Platform, where you can witness the most iconic sunrise scene of Alishan. This trail not only lets you step into nature in the early morning but also allows you to relax and breathe in the fresh air of Alishan while walking. When you reach the viewing platform, the view opens up, and from there you can see the sun rising from the distant mountains, casting golden light on the sea of clouds and mountains. The entire scene looks like a living painting. During the sunrise, the sky presents a beautiful gradient of colors, from golden yellow to orange-red to purple, as if a visual feast. This moment is what all visitors to Alishan dream of, and it is the favorite shooting time for photography lovers.
Fenchihu Old Street
At the foot of Alishan, there is a small alley filled with nostalgic vibes, showcasing the early life of Taiwan. If you come to Alishan, Fenchihu Old Street is definitely a must-visit spot. It not only has historical significance but also offers many unique local snacks and handicrafts, making you feel as if you have returned to the past.
The history of this old street is actually closely related to the Alishan Railway. At that time, Fenchihu was one of the important stations on the Alishan Railway, and it was a transportation hub leading to Alishan, once bustling with activity. With the opening of the Alishan Railway, Fenchihu gradually became a busy transportation hub, and the surrounding alleys developed into the old street we see today. Walking along Fenchihu Old Street, you will find that the architectural style is full of early Taiwanese charm, with wooden structures, red brick walls, and some old shops and signs, all of which make you feel like you are stepping back in time. The atmosphere on the old street is very leisurely. Walking down the street, you can almost hear the whistle of the Alishan Railway train from the past, and every brick and column here holds a story.
Dingshizhao Tea Garden Trail
If you love nature trails and are interested in Taiwan's tea culture, the Dingshizhao Tea Garden Trail is definitely a great place to visit. This trail is located in Alishan, where you can not only enjoy magnificent mountain views but also get an in-depth understanding of the beauty of the tea gardens and the tea-growing process, allowing you to immerse yourself in the fresh air of nature and the tempting aroma of tea while walking. The biggest feature of the Dingshizhao Tea Garden Trail is the tea garden landscape. The tea garden here covers the entire hillside, lush and green, like a sea of emerald green that brings joy to the heart. The design of the trail is very suitable for walking, and as you walk, you can leisurely explore the tea garden while enjoying the mountain scenery. Moreover, there are many tea farmers working in the fields, providing you with an opportunity to learn about the local tea production process.
The trail itself is not difficult to walk, and it is an easy route for most people. Walking on this trail, you can feel the fresh air surrounded by the fragrance of tea and the aroma of the forest, making you feel the healing power of nature. As the trail extends, the view becomes more and more expansive, offering a full view of the mountains and tea gardens, making you want to stop and take photos. In addition, the tea garden here not only has beautiful scenery but also a rich tea culture. You can visit the tea tasting area in the garden to experience the unique flavor of Taiwan’s high mountain tea. Whether you’re tasting a cup of hot tea or communicating with the local tea farmers, you can gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's tea culture.
Tsou Tribe Cultural Village Experience
When you visit Alishan, besides enjoying the majestic natural landscapes, you can also experience the Tsou Tribe cultural village and learn about the traditional lifestyle of Taiwan's indigenous peoples. The Tsou are one of the indigenous tribes in the Alishan area, with a long history and culture, and the Tsou Tribe cultural village is one of the best places to experience indigenous culture up close.
The biggest feature of the Tsou Tribe cultural village is its rich indigenous atmosphere. When you enter the village, you will see traditional thatched huts, wooden structures, and unique decorations, making you feel as if you've traveled back in time. Most of the villagers still maintain traditional ways of life, and you can see them working in the fields or forests, feeling the harmony between them and nature. In the village, you can participate in various educational and cultural experience activities. For example, you can learn to make traditional Tsou handicrafts, weave fabrics, and create bamboo crafts—these are the essence of Tsou culture. I once participated in a Tsou weaving experience, and although the process of hand-weaving requires patience, when I finished, I felt a great sense of accomplishment and deep admiration for the Tsou’s craftsmanship. Tsou traditional music and dance are also an essential part of village life. You can enjoy their unique songs and dances during village celebrations or gatherings, experiencing the powerful and rhythmic energy of indigenous music. These activities are often full of passion and vitality.
Er Yan Ping Trail Hike
The Er Yan Ping Trail starts at Alishan, and the trail is approximately 2 kilometers long, making it a leisurely and enjoyable hike, perfect for nature lovers. Along the trail, you can enjoy the rich forest landscapes of Alishan, with towering trees and fresh air, allowing you to feel the breath of nature with every step. Especially in the morning or evening, when mist and sunlight intertwine in the mountains, it feels like stepping into a fairyland.
The trail is designed to meet the needs of hikers, with common stairs and simple paths, most of which are flat and moderate, making it easy and comfortable to walk. While walking along the trail, you can occasionally stop, listen to the birds, observe the surrounding plants and animals, and perhaps even spot Alishan's unique wildlife, like squirrels or deer, which brings delightful surprises.
In addition to the beautiful natural scenery, the end of the Er Yan Ping Trail also features a viewing platform. When you reach the end and stand on the platform, you can overlook the stunning landscape of Alishan, with mountains layered in the distance and the sea of clouds like smoke, creating a magnificent view. At this moment, you'll feel that all your fatigue disappears, replaced by a sense of relaxation and contentment for your soul.

Alishan 2-Day Trip Tips and Notes
When traveling to Alishan, there are many beautiful sights to see, but there are also a few reminders to help ensure a smooth trip! Below are the key points I’ve put together for your reference:
Transportation Tips
Alishan has some unique transportation regulations. Whether driving, hiring a car, or renting a vehicle, you can only park at the entrance of the recreation area and cannot drive into the park itself. Once inside, remember to take the small train or electric shuttle to explore the main attractions. Popular spots like Fenqihu and the Shizhao Trail, although fun, are not inside the recreation area and require passing through during the round trip.
Weather Can Change Quickly
The weather in Alishan can change rapidly. It may be hot during the day, but it gets cooler in the morning and evening, with large temperature differences. So, be sure to wear layered clothing that you can easily add or remove, and bring rain gear since mountain weather often turns rainy unexpectedly.
Book Small Train Tickets in Advance
The Alishan Forest Railway is very popular, and during peak seasons, tickets can sell out quickly. To avoid missing out and delaying your plans, it's recommended to book your small train tickets and other transportation tickets in advance so you don’t have to worry about not getting tickets!
Hiking Tips
Alishan has many great hiking trails, such as the Giant Trees Trail and Er Yianping Trail, which are fantastic for hiking enthusiasts! However, the trail conditions in the mountains can sometimes be slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes and pay attention to your stamina. Walk slowly and don’t overexert yourself.
Leave Enough Time
Alishan has many scenic spots worth savoring, such as the sunrise and sea of clouds. It's best to leave some time to wake up early or stay a bit later to catch the most beautiful views. Don’t schedule your trip too tightly—give yourself plenty of time to enjoy each attraction.
Motion Sickness
If you're prone to motion sickness, the mountain roads in Alishan may make you feel uncomfortable. It's recommended to bring motion sickness medication or choose other more stable transportation methods to make your trip more relaxing.
Safety First
Although Alishan's trails are beautiful, some areas may be slippery, especially after rain. Be sure to wear suitable footwear and walk carefully to stay safe!
Charging and Internet
Alishan's stunning views can captivate you, but some areas may have poor internet signals, especially in the forest regions. It’s recommended to download maps or your itinerary in advance to avoid issues with internet access. Also, when taking photos or using navigation, remember to bring a power bank to ensure your phone stays charged!
Accommodation Options
When choosing accommodation in Alishan, it really depends on your needs (but remember to book early—there’s a good chance you’ll miss out if you forget!). Accommodation within the park is most convenient for visiting the major attractions, especially for watching the sunrise. Here are a few options:
- Alishan Hotel: This is the most expensive accommodation inside the park, offering high-quality facilities and services, and it has the best location for easy access to the sunrise viewing area, making it the best choice for early risers. Of course, the price is relatively high, and reservations are often required in advance.
- Other hotels in the park: Most of these hotels are around two-star rating, with basic facilities, but they provide direct convenience, especially for those wanting to watch the sunrise in the morning. However, due to high demand, they often book up in advance during peak season, so you may need to consider accommodations outside the park at those times.
If you can’t get accommodation inside the park, then you’ll need to choose a hotel outside the park. Although the drive is about 30-40 minutes, these options have their unique charm, and many hotels are peaceful with relatively affordable prices. If you choose accommodation outside the park, you can arrange transportation in advance, such as using Tripool’s charter service for smooth, worry-free transportation.
By keeping these little details in mind, you can easily enjoy Alishan’s beautiful attractions and make your trip smoother and more fulfilling!
