Night markets are an essential part of Taiwanese culture and have been a longstanding tradition in the country. Being listed as one of the top ten most popular museums in the world, National Palace Museum (國立故宮博物院) is undoubtedly a must-see attraction in Taiwan. Situated in a lush-hillside suburb of Taipei City, this palace-like building with a traditional Chinese-courtyard atmosphere is so easily identified. You are impossible to miss it.

The origin of the museum comes from a rather attractive history. The National Palace Museum was established as the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City in 1925, where was the house of most precious and historical Chinese arts. However, due to the Second Sino-Japanese War and Chinese Civil War, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek of Nationalist Government decided to evacuated some of the most prized arts to Taiwan and prevented them from stolen and damage during the war. Eventually, the Taipei National Palace Museum was established in 1965 and became the new home of the largest amount of Chinese priceless treasures in the world. Thus, It is also named as Yat-Sen Museum because 1965 is also the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sun Yat-Sen (1866~1925), the founder of Republic of China.

Known as a treasure house of Chinese culture, National Palace museum covers diverse and delicate artifacts, including scroll paintings, calligraphy, jade, bronze castings, porcelain and ancient books. Its collection consists of more than 650,000 pieces that spans many dynasties of China. Among all the precious treasures, there are some signatures in the museum that you should not miss, such as Jade Cabbage, Meat-Shaped Stone, Bell of Zhou…and so on. From which you are going to realize how ancient Chinese reflected their rich culture, philosophy and customs through the art works.

Same as every famous museum in the world, Taipei National Palace Museum provides free guiding tours in Mandarin and English everyday. When it comes to Taipei, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) is definitely one of the landmarks you may associate with. Located right beside the MRT C.K.S. Chiang Kai-Shek (C.K.S.) succeeded the unfulfilled wishes of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and strived for the modernization of the Republic of China. As a leader of Nationalist Party in the middle of 20th century, he led the wars in the east and north of China and fought against the Japanese and the Chinese Communist Party. After his death on 5th of April 1975, citizens and overseas Chinese proposed to establish a memorial hall to commemorate this leader. Later on, the government decided to take the idea from the architect Mr. Yang Zhao-Cheng and started the construction in 1976. Finally, the construction of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall was completed and officially open to public in 1980.

Take a close look at this solemn Chinese-style architecture. Its exquisite design conveys the spirit of Chinese culture. The exhibition hall on the ground floor tells you about Chiang Kai-Shek’s life stories. As we get higher, galleries and exhibition rooms can be found on 2nd and 3rd floors. One thing that is especially worth mentioning is that you definitely cannot miss the must-see spectacle on 4th floor, the honor guard shift-changing performance. The show starts on the hour everyday from nine o’clock in the morning to five o’clock in the afternoon.

Beside the memorial hall itself, there are two giant and traditional Chinese palace-like buildings. They are the National Theater and National Concert Hall. Moreover, the memorial park with its area of 250000 square meters is also a paradise for animals and plants in Taipei city. Since the 19th century, Dadaocheng has maintained its position as a prime hub for goods distribution in northern Taiwan, with Dihua Street (迪化街), spanning approximately 800 meters, at its core. Several old businesses still operate on the street to this day.
