Shuzijiao Church

In the Citong Township of Yunlin lies a peculiar Catholic church, whose architecture is mix of Western and Chinese-influenced styles. On the outside, the eastern octagonal roof is topped with a cross to complete a bold yet harmonious blend. Inside the church, the hexagonal intricate caisson is domed above the statue of Jesus, and an incense burner is lit before the statue. Unsurprisingly, Mary venerated in the stone cave is being worshipped in the same way as well. The church is such a stunning example of the perfect blend between Chinese and Western elements.

The more-than-a-century-old Shuzijiao Church is also the first Catholic church in Yunlin. There is a giant banyan tree standing in front of the church, hence the name Shuzijiao Church (literally “the church under the tree”), also known as St. Joseph Church.

The entrance to the church is through a traditional style of Chinese architectural archway. Don’t look any further — you’re at the right place!
