There are two highways that pass through Taiwan from north to south. The roads extend hundreds kilometers, crossing over some big cities and more countryside throughout the island. To provide drivers some places to rest, to dine, or even to take a bath on the way, there are service areas about every 50 kilometers. In response to the development of tourism, service areas also combined with local features. Some take advantage of its landforms, providing travelers a good place to overlook the urban area; some introduce special architectural design to amaze the travelers; and more others offer local cuisine, which let the freeway travelers enjoy the delicacies without leaving the freeway.
What is most famous in Gukeng, Yunlin, is coffee. In addition to cafe, there is a display space about how people make coffee with simple tools long ago when there was no coffee roaster. You can try sausages in coffee favor in hot food court. Aside from cafe, you could find beef noodles, chicken rice and Japanese cuisine here. Even some local foods like Sun Biscuit from Taichung or Green Bean Cake from Lukang could be purchased here.
If you are in a hurry and impossible to go to Taichung, there is a branch of Lavender Cottage called Herb Booth (香草舖子) in the service area, which sells soaps and skin care products. You may browse some clothes shop or try crane machine if you are bored.
