Hushan Temple, built in 1725, mainly worships Guanyin Bodhisattva. The vegetation around the temple makes it seem even more mythical. You can find a giant statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva in the main temple and a 150 meter tall golden statue of Maitreya on the nearby hilltop. The smile of golden Maitreya is visible even in the downtown of Douliu City and therefore has become a well-known landmark of Douliu. Unfortunately, however, the huge statue has already been closed to visitors for a while now. But if you take a walk in the temple, you will find an impressive Buddhist Sculpture Park. The surrounding mountains and the green pond in the park make these golden Buddhist statues even more solemn and sacred. Every year on the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, Buddha’s birthday is celebrated. On this day, Buddhist temples around Taiwan host all kinds of festivals celebrating the birth of the sage. Hushan Temple is no exception. If you happen to visit on this day, you will also have the opportunity to say happy birthday to Buddha. Although there are some places at Hushan Temple that need maintenance, the golden Avalokitesvara, the emerald green of the roofs and railings, the bright red door and the rich colors of the central lake, make this temple different somehow. There is no sense of having seen it all before at Hushan Temple, its size and splendor give a quality that needs to be experienced to be understood.
