Suhua Hwy

Attraction stories

The Suhua Highway is an important artery connecting Yilan and Hualien, stretching approximately 102.4 kilometers and providing stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful scenery where the mountains meet the sea. The history of this highway dates back to the Qing Dynasty's Northern Route, and it was officially opened in 1932, once known as the "Coastal Road." After World War II, it was renamed the Suhua Highway.

This road is acclaimed as a world-famous scenic highway, with conditions that vary greatly. Due to its mountainous location, it often faces challenges from natural disasters such as earthquakes and landslides. Therefore, traveling on the Suhua Highway is not just an ordinary journey but a battle against nature. On stormy days, the mountains may become blocked by falling rocks, creating certain difficulties for local traffic.

The attractions along the way are quite diverse. The Qingshui Cliff is one of the most famous representatives, having been selected as one of Taiwan's "Twelve Wonders" during the Japanese occupation period, and over time it has become a must-see destination for tourists. The spectacular views of the cliff draw many photography enthusiasts and serve as a microcosm of nature’s power. Additionally, visitors can enjoy distinctive landmarks such as the Zhengdao Bridge, Wuyan Cape Viewing Platform, and the Gufeng Bridge along the route.

The Suhua Highway has earned the nickname "Death Highway" due to its frequent accidents, sparking widespread discussion and concern about safety. Between 1997 and 2008, several serious accidents occurred here, resulting in numerous casualties. Consequently, the government's initiatives known as "Suhua Improvement" and "Suhua Safety" are necessary measures aimed at addressing safety issues while seeking to enhance driving safety without compromising the beautiful scenery.

The charm of the Suhua Highway lies in its unique natural landscape and rich cultural heritage, but its challenges and dangers must also be taken seriously. Nevertheless, those who travel this highway can still experience Taiwan's most pristine natural beauty and the historical grandeur nestled between rugged mountains and the sea.
