Axing Stinky Tofu

Unlike Jiufen Old Street or Tamsui Old Street that are well known among foreign tourists, Daxi Old Street is more popular with the locals, especially for its many delicacies. Among the famous cuisine on offer is Axing Stinky Tofu, situated in a small alley and a taste not to be missed. The appearance of Axing Stinky Tofu is much like that of many small eateries in Taiwan, where the chef is behind a simple stall cooking and the guests can sit in a small room behind him to enjoy their hot meal. Although the restaurant is called “stinky tofu”, the smell of the tofu is far from having the stink of many other vendors in Taiwan. In fact, according to the locals, this stall sells food closer to deep-fried tofu instead. Accompanied by a small spoon of picked cabbage (酸菜) and chilli sauce (辣椒醬), it is no wonder that Daxi locals working out of town miss it like crazy. Other similar dishes are simply not the same. With an integration of flavours, it is something like half stinky tofu and half deep-fried radish cake, crisp outside and soft inside. This is a taste unlike anything you will often meet!
