Taitung’s nightlife wasn’t much to rave about, but things have changed since Taitung Tourism Night Market was brought to life in 2010. During the day, the street is saturated with vendors selling local grown veggies and fruits; when the sun goes down, it is turned into a vibrant night market that entertains visitors and satisfies their taste buds.
Although the variety of fare is not as impressive as that of other major night markets, the not-crowded Taitung Tourism Night Market boasts a completely different vibe. The delicious street snacks here are quite unique and well worth a try such as giant takoyaki, gua bao, Hunan crispy pocket, and many more. The giant takoyaki is a fist-sized ball-shaped Japanese snack filled with diced octopus, broccoli, shrimp, mushroom, and fishball — all in one single takoyaki! The gua bao is a fluffy white steamed bun, filled with the succulent grilled pork, pickled vegetables and peanut powder, bringing out the savoriness and the complexity of the texture. The crispy pocket is said to be something that you can’t find elsewhere: baked on the wall of a clay oven, the pies are filled with sweet or savory varieties that will please all palates and tastes.
Unlike other major night markets, here at Taitung Tourism Night Market, the street is reserved for pedestrians only. Chairs and tables are set in the middle of the street, so diners can sit down for a nice meal out. The night market also offers eclectic entertainment for families to have a great time together without breaking the bank.
