Amis Folk Center

Attraction stories

As the largest aboriginal tribe in Taiwan, the Amis get to preserve more of their traditions that have been in existence for as long as they have been. Sitting right next to Douli Visitor Center, Amis Folk Center has a mission to promote the indigenous culture through education.

The construction of the center was based on sketches and drawings from 1943 by the hands of a Japanese ethnologist, fully demonstrating the style and layout of a traditional thatched cottage unique to the Amis tribe. Serving as a miniature of a traditional tribe, the Amis Folk Center covers a number of family houses, a community center, a site where sacrificial rituals take place, and many more.

To provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the aboriginal life of the Amis tribe, daily cultural activities are organized on-site such as archery and bamboo cannons. You will also encounter a giant swing traditionally used in Amis marriage ceremonies. Don’t be afraid to get on the swing as it’s made safe and strong. Another highlight is the traditional music performance featuring nose flutes, pan flutes and some other bamboo percussion instruments. If you’re in the mood, why not come on the stage after the performance to try out some of these traditional instruments and see if you have a gift for music?
