Liyushan

Sitting right in the middle of Taitung City, Liyushan happens to be in a shape of a carp, with two tunnels resembling the eyes of the carp, hence the name. Though it is merely 75 meters high, from the top of the mountain, you can enjoy a panorama of Taitung City in its entirety; on a clear day, you might even see Orchid Island and Green Island in the distance.

This is a playground of many local kids. Many historic ruins such as air-raid shelters, pillboxes and artillery batteries can still be seen at the park. In front of the Martyrs' Shrine, street vendors line up on weekends to sell popular snacks and folk games. Kids are running around while parents enjoy a leisurely walk. A lot of senior citizens often come there for the sake of karaoke and Chinese chess under the shade of the banyan tree. The Dragon & Phoenix Temple gained its popularity after some prehistoric stone coffins and artifacts were found here. The trail that leads up to the top of the mountain is smooth enough but the number of steps can be overwhelming. Many lookouts along the shady trail offer a panoramic view of the city, but the best is yet to come — you will find out when you reach the top.
