Real Guts

Real Guts is a café opened by the famous Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng. In the store, you can see the baseball gloves and clothing that appeared in the film Kano, as well as the aboriginal costume and props used by the lead actor Seediq Bale (賽德克·巴萊) in the film. You can even see the director’s chair that would normally only be visible on the film set itself, as well as the clapperboard, movie film and the Golden Horse trophy won by Wei Te-sheng (although no one knows if it is real or not!). The coffee shop utilises many retro elements, such as old cabinets, compartments made of wooden window frames, old-fashioned street lamps, and newspaper racks equipped with old clocks and quaint posters.

While the food choices on offer are quite limited, everything on the menu tastes reasonably good. If you’re not sure what to try, golden butter fish and bread (黃金牛奶魚布列德) is a good option if you are craving something European inspired, as it consists primarily of bread, fish and salad. As it is light, you won’t feel uncomfortably full after finishing it. Crisp cake with smoked duck and scallions (香蔥燻鴨脆餅) is another good option, consisting of cucumbers and smoked duck. But the serving size is not big, so accompany this with a dessert if you are still hungry! But if you are hungry for more than just food, Real Guts is a great place to nourish your cultural and artistic self too. Movie industry related lectures and independent film launches are frequently held here, and the restaurant also sells movie-related merchandise.
