Taiwanese people have a liking for spicy foods, so Sichuan cuisine can be commonly seen around here. However, not many people are aware of the fact that Guizhou cuisine is also a delight to tantalize your spicy palate. The quaint neighborhood of Dadaocheng hides the very first Chinese restaurant in Taiwan that serves up uncompromising Guizhou cuisine in all its sour and spicy glory. The complexity of the bold flavor will be a challenge for every wussy palate.
One of the must-tries here is the dried chicken with assorted vegetables, regarded as a welcoming dish unique in the homes of Miao people. The waiter will bring a whole bunch of ingredients including sprouts, chicken and green peppers to your table and fry everything in a pot with a special sauce from Guizhou. Together with the potato slices that are crispy around the edges and soft in the middle, this lavish dish is simply finger lickin’ good. Another not-to-be missed is the steamed chicken with codonopsis (Dang Shen), which must be reserved in advance. By “reserved” I mean you have to call them beforehand and remind them to save you some almighty steamed chicken until you get there. You can’t just pop in and say, “hey, I want to have one of those chicken. I heard it’s good.” No, it doesn’t work that way. Without being added with any water or seasoning during the whole process, the chicken is perfectly steamed for eight hours and served to you table as a comforting chicken soup. Other specialties include the crispy sandwiches made with rice crusts, and the most-ordered item on the menu is the four assorted cold appetizers. Spicy food might be intimidating, but Guizhou cuisine will never disappoint.
