Lin An Tai Historical House and Museum

  • Culture

The Lin An Tai Historical House, also known as "Rong Tai House," is a historically significant siheyuan (courtyard house) located in the Binjiang Park of Taipei's Zhongshan District. The history of this ancient residence dates back to the 19th century, with the main structure completed between 1783 and 1785, while the side rooms were built successively from 1822 to 1823. The house’s owner, Lin Huigong, hailed from Anxi in Quanzhou, Fujian, and named the house to honor his homeland. It also stands as a testament to the development of the Taipei Basin, making it one of the oldest Qing Dynasty residences still existing in the Taipei area.

The construction characteristics of this ancient house are captivating. The Lin An Tai Historical House showcases a typical Minnan style, featuring a one-story, two-entry layout and unique water-shaped gable walls with a swallow-tail ridge. Its structure is built with a mix of brick, stone, wood, and earthen materials, avoiding the use of exposed nails; instead, it employs joints, concealed nails, or wedges for connection. The main hall, acting as the central axis of the entire house, possesses a special design, with four golden columns moved into the hall to enlarge the usable space. The diamond-patterned floor tiles intersect in a zigzag shape, symbolizing family prosperity.

Inside the house, various cultural symbols seem to narrate its historical story. The intricately carved window features a pair of mythical dragons embracing a censer, while the floral patterns of peonies on the temple door, along with the totem combinations of the kui dragon, formulate the four characters: "Fu, Lu, Shou, Quan" (Blessings, Prosperity, Longevity, and Wholeness), all of which highlight the profound essence of traditional culture. Additionally, the design of the "Moon Eyebrow Pond" is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional for defense, fire safety, and water supply, showcasing its practicality.

Currently, the Lin An Tai Historical House is managed by the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Taipei City Government, having been transformed into a folk museum that offers a variety of cultural exhibitions and activities. The periodically held "Double Happiness Arrives – Blessings and Ritual Cultural Exhibition" is quite popular, and the museum also provides venue rental services, making it convenient for the public to hold events. Over time, the Lin An Tai Historical House has gradually become an important tourist attraction, drawing countless visitors to explore and learn about traditional culture, allowing more people to appreciate the charm of this ancient and culturally rich siheyuan.
