Foreign tourists coming to Taipei can’t miss the landmark of Taipei 101. After visiting it, you can go to the nearby underground food street to enjoy the famous soup dumplings, which are more commonly known as xiaolongbao (小籠包), at Din Tai Fung. No matter whether you decide to go to the top floor of Taipei 101 or stay underground to enjoy the flavours of Taiwan, both options need a long time waiting in line, making it frustrating if you are with your whole family or your friends. But, if you walk in the direction of the Taipei World Trade Center and pass Keelung Road, you will arrive in the council housing area which has been reconstructed where the Military Dependents’ Village once stood. In this area, you can find many good restaurants, some of which have been here for more than twenty years. The northern Chinese noodle house, brought to Taiwan by Chiang Kai-shek, Sichuan spicy hot pot, and our most favourite restaurant of all, Guanganlou, which was established by a couple from Hong Kong, are among the choices on offer.
This Hong Kong style Cantonese restaurant does not have lavish decorations, and is not situated near a bustling big road. Diners who come do so because of word of mouth. Crispy fried chicken, steamed egg custard, yinsijuan (silver thread roll, 銀絲卷), sweet and sour pork ribs (which goes well with rice), and the signature dish, crispy duck with whipped taro root (芋泥香酥鴨) all catch the eye. Every dish is delicious and inexpensive. When you finish your meals, you are guaranteed to already be thinking about when you will next be back to try out the other dishes on the menu!
