Fuzhou Dry Noodle

It is not an easy task to find decent cheap eats in the glamourous Xinyi District, but thankfully we will have Fuzhou Noodle House, a historic eatery regarded as a mecca for white-collar workers who work nearby. The menu is fairly limited, but a selection of noodles and wontons will fill your stomach without emptying your wallet. Prices range from TWD30 to 70. The signature noodles can be served as a large or small portion. The classic bowl of noodles is only sprinkled with a pinch of scallions and a bit of dressing when brought to your table — very refreshing and light on the stomach. You can also follow the standard steps by first adding a little black vinegar on top, then some chili pepper seeds, and finally the spicy aromatic oil. Each step allows you to experience the bold tastes from mildly sour to slightly spicy and extremely spicy. It is surprising how a simple bowl of noodles can manage to handle such a complexity.

Other dishes such as wontons served in a fragrant ruby red chilli oil and noodles sided with an over easy egg are also worth a try. In another rainy day in Taipei, why not order the combo soup that has a yummy combination of Fuzhou fish balls, wontons and an over easy egg to warm your body and soul?
