As one of the Eight Culinary Traditions of Chinese cuisine, Zhejiang cuisine is also very much loved here in Taiwan. For example, Cai Wan Xing is a historic eatery no to be missed in Taipei. A wide variety of Ningbo local snacks can be found on the menu, including Huzhou rice dumplings, wontons filled with veggies and pork, glutinous rice cakes, glutinous rice balls, the rice wine made with sweet osmanthus flowers, and many more. Two decades ago, in order to cater to the wider community’s needs, this place started serving up traditional Zhejiang appetisers such as pork chops with vegetable rice, braised crucian carps with scallions, and the fish head casserole. The succulent pork chop topped on the refreshing vegetable rice is a very filling treat that’s sure to satisfy. The rich broth of the fish head casserole is deeply flavored all by itself, and the crispy fish head is surprisingly juicy and tender on the inside — even non-fish eaters should have a go.
The specialty Ningbo local snacks are still the favorites of loyal patrons after all these years. Glutinous rice balls with sesame filling are usually sold out soon after the door is open. The sweet rice wine has a pleasant aroma of floral notes with a refreshing aftertaste. With a bit of alcohol added to it, the Huzhou rice dumpling filled with sticky rice and flavorful ingredients will give you a kick. The eatery neither is impressive-looking from the outside nor has eye-catching design inside, but it is no doubt a decent place to delight your fussy palate.
