Located near the Taipei Railway Station, 228 Peace Memorial Park invites a wealth of nearby residents and patients of the National Taiwan University Hospital to take a rest here. The small pool, the Chinese pavilion, and the plants and flowers all provide a strong contrast to the modern buildings and skyscrapers surrounding the area. When it comes to holidays, young children will take food to feed the squirrels and pigeons under trees. Visitors sit on benches browsing travel books, thinking about their next destination. Believers travelling back and forth under a paifang (Chinese ancient archway) pray for blessings in front of a modest temple. However, visitors here seem to pay little attention to the meaning of the park. In fact, the park is built to remember the 228 Incident and to memorize the Taiwanese people who had suffered for ethnic conflicts, clashes between the government and citizens, and historical misunderstandings. The huge monument in the center and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum are trying to explain the causes and outcomes in the past event from the view of a new generation. However, since the event is tangled in history, it takes time to comprehend the complex situation. If you are interested in the history, it is recommended to visit the nearby National 228 Memorial Museum. As for the way to explore the park in city, just take a carefree, easy stroll in it.
