West Market

West Market is located in the Zhongxi District of Tainan City, and was once the biggest market in Taiwan. Although it has already declined somewhat, there are still businesses operating here. In the early period of the Japanese rule, the colonial government believed that traditional markets were of poor hygiene, so began building new markets. West Market was opened in 1905, and, at the time was the largest market in southern Taiwan, featuring one hundred stalls selling all sorts of groceries, fruit and vegetables. In 1920, because of typhoon damage to West Market, it had to be reconstructed. At this time, a light railway that could transport the goods from the suburbs to the marketplace was built. Following World War Two, West Market continued operating but begun its gradual decline. Today, the roof construction of the market has disappeared, leaving many exposed beams. Nevertheless, this remains a fascinating glimpse into the prosperity of this area in the past. Nowadays, only sporadic businesses remain, such as a vegetable stall, a hardware store and old-fashioned clothes shops. As well as that, the nostalgic Furong Repasts (福榮小吃店-阿瑞意麵) and Jiangshuihao Shaved Ice (江水號剉冰) still attract many locals and tourists today for some great food!
