Apart from the often sold out Taicheng Fruit Shop (泰成水果店) and Brian Black Tea (布萊恩紅茶), where you will definitely need to queue, Tainan’s Zhengxing Street (正興街) has another popular dessert shop called Ninao Gelato. This is a Japanese-style house which sells Japanese ice-creams that fit with the atmosphere of its architecture. Selling only one flavor of ice-cream a day, there are Tieguanyin (鐵觀音), almond (杏仁) or Japanese matcha (日式抹茶) rotations. Although there are already several branches opened, the supply just can’t fulfil the demand. No matter that each ice-cream is a relatively expensive TWD80, and sometimes you have to wait half an hour in queue, every summer there are guaranteed to be long waits.
The Japanese matcha taste is neither sweet nor quickly boring. With cereals and biscuits hidden inside, the taste is just right. In addition to ice-cream, there are also macarons and red bean pie (紅豆派) for sale here. Next time you take a walk on Haian Road (海安路), look out for the Japanese-style lanterns hanging outside Ninao Gelato before sitting down to enjoy a good gelato out of the southern Taiwan heat. You’ll need to judge for youself whether the famous Ninao Gelatos are worth the extra money, and the long wait!
