Longqi Wenheng Temple

If you have read the famous Chinese novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” (三國演義), you should already have some impression of Guan Yu (關羽) from the Three Kingdoms period. Because of his chivalry and loyalty, he has gradually become worshipped as Guan Gong (關公) by many in Taiwan, especially businessmen and gang members. Tainan’s Longqi Wenheng Temple worships Guan Gong. Originally constructed as a simple temple, it was later transformed into a magnificent piece of architecture under the sponsorship of a construction company owner. The most interesting feature of this temple would have to be the massive figures of Hulk, Transformers and Iron Man that guard the temple. The temple states that these super-heroes are sponsored by individuals. If you walk around the neighborhood near Longqi Wenheng Temple, you will see dozens of bronze works made by Chen Zhen-xiong (陳正雄). One of these depicts people playing chess, another shows someone playing the violin, while still others portray fishing. These are vivid depictions of the everyday life of Taiwanese people, and absolutely worth a visit. Longqi Wenheng Temple may be one of the most unexpected temples in Taiwan, and is definitely one you won’t forget!
