Grand Gorge

Located in the upper reaches of the Nanhua Reservoir, Grand Gorge is secret paradise surprisingly underwater for nine months of the year and can visible during dry seasons. Between February and April, visitors have an opportunity to walk along this dry river bed, but watch your steps though. It is not bone dry, so at some point, you might find yourself plodding towards the muddy waters.

A thirty minutes’ walk will take you to another side of the river. However, you might want to pay extra attention as you continue to explore. The gorge walls have become quite fragile after many years of the scouring action of water, and falling rocks are not uncommon here. At the end of the gorge, a small scenic waterfall serves as a great spot to picnic with friends. Since Grand Gorge is located in the upper reaches of a reservoir that provides drinking water for southern Taiwan, leave nothing but footprints.

At Grand Gorge, where tiny humans are lost in the majesty of nature, you will see one of the finest works of art created by Mother Nature. For nature lovers and adventure seekers, Grand Gorge won’t disappoint. Make sure to wear comfortable sneakers or hiking boots, but for your own safety, stay away from the area especially after the earthquakes. Senior citizens and visitors with limited mobility are advised not to enter under any circumstances.
