National Cheng Kung University in Tainan is one of the leading universities in Taiwan. As southern Taiwan is blessed with abundant sunshine all year round, the NCKU students are generally outgoing and embrace their surroundings.
Established in 1931, NCKU consists of eight different campuses that create a stunning backdrop for all that happens within the university. The double rows of trees planted along the boulevard makes a beautiful campus walk. As you walk through the arched cloisters and pass red brick walls, history is evident in every corner with architecture that dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The bright red, arched bridge connecting the islets on the Chengkung Lake is a main draw for visitors to the campus, but the Banyan Garden is no doubt the most famous landmark of NCKU and where the students like to hang out the most. Planted by the then-Emperor Hirohito himself, this massive banyan tree is now a salient symbol of NCKU.
Yule Street across the street from the university is a popular food lane where students on a budget have their tantalizing taste of Tainan. Another hot spot for food is tucked away in the 18th lane of Daxue Road. Here, you will find myriads of independent café and restaurants that will please locals and visitors alike with the variety of exotic cuisine on offer ranging from Greek and Italian delicacies to Japanese and Thai food.
