Tainan is famous for night market snacks. In addition to Flowers and Dadong Night Markets, which are familiar to the Taiwanese, there are more than a few small night markets hidden in alleys and the countryside, and Nanxi Night Market is among them. Only open on Friday in the small village Nanxi, the night market is particularly attractive. The fare is delicious in almost every stall, and the variety of snacks here is amazing. In addition, since it's a night market taking place on the village street, people wandering in the market are almost nearby residents. Compared to the experience in the city, it's quite different to stroll in a not-crowded night market.

The first delicious night market snack comes Douruji (fermented tofu chicken, 豆乳雞). Somewhat similar to the common popcorn chicken (Taiwanese fried chicken, 鹽酥雞), Douruji is marinated with fermented tofu before it is deep-fried. The sweetness tasted in a bite, along with the chicken's saltiness, makes Douruji outshine the popcorn chicken you have ever eaten. In front of a temple stands a stall selling Shao Xiancao (hot grass jelly, 燒仙草). Complemented with peanuts, a cup of Shao Xiancao warms your body in a cold winter. Other popular snacks, such as scallion pancakes (蔥油餅), fried mutton, Shanyu Noodle (eel noodles, 鱔魚麵), stinky tofu, and oyster omelets, are all filled with compelling aroma. But the highlight of Nanxi Night Market is the almond drink with Youtiao (fried bread stick, 油條). Freshly-fried crispy Youtiao matches scented almond drink perfectly. Dip Youtiao in the almond drink and taste it, you'll regret not savoring the delicious fare much earlier.
