Nanhua Reservoir

The construction of Nanhua Dam began in 1988 and was completed in 1994, providing a total catchment area of 104 square kilometres and a reservoir capacity of over one hundred million cubic meters. Today, it is an important reservoir in the Tainan/Kaohsiung area and one of the catchments responsible for public water supply. Due to the high altitude of the reservoir, its misty beauty also makes for a special place for visitors to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Taiwan. As the reservoir is currently not open, the only place you can see the whole dam from a distance is the platform near the office building. From here, you can enjoy the pleasant view of the mountains.

Beneath the Nanhua Dam lies the Jiaobanian Battlefield (焦吧粘古戰場), where is commemorated the 1915 Han Chinese armed resistance to Japan, known as the Tapani Incident (西來庵事件). This event can be said to be the largest and final armed struggle in the history of Japan’s governing of Taiwan. After the colonial government violently suppressed protests, Taiwanese changed their methods, endeavouring to peacefully reform the system in place. Today, this historic battlefield is planned to become a Military Park, and many retired weapons have already been placed here on display. If you came to the south of the reservoir, do not forget to visit the Jiaobanian Battlefield, a site which pays homage to a heroic popular uprising from a century past. And if you would like to keep on exploring, you will find many untouched forests, waterfalls and valleys upstream of the reservoir. If you would like to journey south of the reservoir, the village of Guanshan (關山村) is always a good choice.
