Don’t assume that coffee culture in Taiwan is a recent phenomenon. In fact, as early as the Japanese occupation, Tainan already had cafes. Nevertheless, there were not many cafes back then, and it was only the Japanese aristocracy who could afford to go and relax in them. Today, one hundred years later, if you want to experience the feeling of a Japanese style cafe, Kadoya, in the eastern district of Tainan, is somewhere you can’t miss. The store is covered with understated but charming retro green tiles. Because the boss not only likes to eat dessert for himself, but is also fond of making desserts, he has done extensive study with chefs. But because the boss did not receive formal dessert training from an institution, the taste of the desserts here sometimes are a little different from what you might expect, sometimes a little too sweet and sometimes not quite sweet enough. Because the staff are always very busy serving cake, or arranging takeaways at the checkout, there is not much time for them to greet guests waiting inside and outside the store. Nevertheless, there is never a break in the crowds flocking here. Perhaps because the store's decor creates a feeling of a Japanese-style family cafe, as well as because of the boss’s outspoken personality, Kadoya regularly gets the attention of bloggers and even TV. This is despite its high price, small seats and bad location. If you are curious about visiting a Japanese style cafe, or if you want to taste some exquisite desserts, absolutely consider Kadoya as your destination.
