The downtown of Taichung City was modernised by the Japanese and, today, the radial streets near TRA Taichung Station and the old-style Japanese wooden buildings on street corners remind residents of its past. But because of urban development, these old houses have gradually been disappearing from the urban landscape. Indeed, those that have not already been demolished, are often abandoned.
If you want to experience an old Japanese wooden house, we suggest you take a walk to Timeless. The original Timeless has moved from its previous location on Dacheng Street (大誠街) to another old building on Zizhi Street (自治街). The new location not only provides more space, but also allows for the history and culture of this building to be more deeply felt. You will be able to see many old fashioned decorations and furniture items here. Their ingenuous arrangement by the owner gives people the sense that they are witnessing a fresh, new history before their eyes. For example, the washboards that people once used in the river have been converted into stools. Old frosted glass has been used to make a ceiling lampshade and wicker chairs and an inlaid marble table sit inside the house, making the space full of nostalgic atmosphere.
The Taiwanese tea served here is farmed entirely naturally, free of any pesticide residues which are bad for the health. There are also three health teas available for anyone wanting an immune boost. Of course, you can also find single origin coffee and handmade desserts here. If you are looking for somewhere to spend a leisurely afternoon with friends, or would like to find a quiet corner to open up a book in, you cannot miss Taichung’s Timeless!
