Taichung Broadcasting Bureau

The Taichung Broadcasting Bureau is a building rich in historical significance, located in the North District of Taichung City, Taiwan. Constructed in 1935 (the tenth year of the Showa era), it was established as the third broadcasting station by the Japanese government during the colonial period. In the social context of the time, this building played a crucial role in the development of broadcasting and became a key hub for radio transmission across Taiwan.

This two-story building features unique design elements, including seven exquisite white decorations on the exterior of the upstairs terrace. Three of these bear the letters "BCC" (representing Central Broadcasting Corporation), while the other four combine the emblem of Taichung City with the broadcaster's logo, giving the overall appearance a distinctive character reminiscent of a castle. The windows are also varied in shape, showcasing a strong reflection of the era's architectural style.

Historically, the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau has not only symbolized broadcasting technology but also played an important political role. It was used to announce imperial decrees and, during the latter part of World War II, aired the emperor's unconditional surrender announcement to the public. This history makes the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau a key location for studying the changes in Taiwan's history.

From its inception, the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau was entrusted with significant responsibilities, promoting listener education and producing and distributing programs. After the end of World War II in 1945, the building was renamed the Taiwan Broadcasting Station, focusing on the dissemination and teaching of Mandarin, thus introducing a new cultural wave into society. In 1949, ownership of the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau was transferred to the China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and it was renamed "CBC Taichung Station." In 1998, the ownership of this historical structure was handed over to the Taichung City Government, making it a cultural asset shared by the citizens.

After repairs and rebuilding following the 921 earthquake, the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau was registered as a historical building in 2002. It has now been revitalized as an important exhibition venue, attracting many visitors and culture enthusiasts who come to admire and learn, making it a highlight of Taichung City. This historic building is not only a tourist attraction but also a precious cultural memory.
