No.111, Sec. 2, Shuangshi Rd., North Dist., Taichung City 404, Taiwan (R.O.C.)
Although there are many good cafes and themed restaurants in Taichung, none quite beat Banana New Paradise. One of the most extraordinary teahouses in Taichung, Banana New Paradise comes alive with a recreation of a Taiwan street between 1920 and 1940, complete with Qing dynasty and colonial-era store fronts, and original antiques and collector items. The street includes such quirks as a 50 year-old taxi, a camera store, a dentist office (with all sorts of scary implements!), a barber shop, a candy store and a movie theatre. Many old posters line the walls that document the concerns of times past, such as using contraception, not using wet hands to touch plugs, and being strong to defeat the communists.
And don’t forget that Banana New Paradise is also a restaurant! Visitors can sit at tables along the street or inside shops to enjoy affordable Taiwanese meals in a very Taiwanese setting. Delightfully, the menu is written in an elementary school book. We particularly recommend the fried chicken (油淋去骨雞) prawn balls in a mayonnaise sauce (鳳梨蝦球). Go outside the restaurant to board an old train and take pictures of the inside. If you are lucky, you will also see the old trains tools from times past. Come here for a trip down memory lane, and fill up your belly while you’re at it.
- We stop here for lunch on our Taichung Fireflies tour. Combined with a visit to the equally fascinating Moncoeur and Carton King, spend a day of diversity with our friendly guides without the hassle of catching public transport.
