Driving along Provincial Highway 26, you pass Kenting and reach eastern Taiwan. At the end of the highway, before you drive into the forest from the seashore, you'll be stopped at a checkpoint set by the police. Here is the entrance to Alangyi Old Trail. Visitors without permits are not allowed to enter. However, if you keep driving on the forked path next to the entrance, you can reach the grassland above the old trail to watch the sunrise and stars. Park the car, pass the half-deserted visitor center and a few stalls, step onto the stairs, traverse through a small forest, bypass a Chinese pavilion decorated with aboriginal totems, and you'll find the so-called "Xuhai Grassland" is actually a large tract of small bushes. If you are misled by the name and want to have a grass skiing here, you are sure to be disappointed. But when you stand on the edge of the cliff with an altitude of about 300 meters, watching the boundless sky, the sea horizon, and the sun slowly rise in the early morning, you are actually enjoying a touching tranquility experienced only by a few.
