Nanliao Community

Compared to Erkan Village in the West Isle, Nanliao Community in Huxi Town offers visitors a glimpse of local life. Even today, local people are still living in Nanliao Community, where the characteristics it gradually reveals do not make it too commercial. Visitors will first be impressed by all kinds of floating balls installed along the street, which were painted with simple geometric patterns or various illustrations of tigers, cats, and flowers. These creative paintings help visitors easily understand the community's background as a fishing village. In addition, lots of fishing tools, which were left from the old back-breaking fishing days, have been carefully preserved. One of the examples is the “fish stove.” In the past, whenever men brought home the fish they caught, women would quickly boiled the fish in a fish stove, and then dried the fish in the sun so as to preserve them.

Other places that shine with the former villagers' wisdom of living include the huge well in the center of the community, the coral stonewalls beside farmland used as windshields, the pit storing cowpats as fuels, etc. A visit to Nanliao Community is sure to make you experience the laborious life of the fishermen.
