Shimen Arch

Attraction stories

As one of the great natural wonders of the North Coast, a visit to this highway rest stop is well-worth your time. Although its Chinese name (石門洞) means “cave”, this rock formation is now more appropriately referred to as an arch as scientists have come to understand its origin. Over time, the inward and outward movement of the tides eroded the bottom of this land mass, leaving behind an archway when the land was subsequently pushed upward.

Steps have been constructed leading to the top of the arch which holds a small viewing platform. Make the climb and be rewarded with a perfect landscape scene of the ocean. But don't forget some photos from down below: as if a portal to another world, this archway beckons you to imagine what's beyond its reach.
