Sandiao Cape is where Mother Nature has created one of her finest works of art. The striking basalt rock formations together with well-developed wave-cut platforms lined with the coastline from Sandiao Cape to Dali have great aesthetic values. This is also the best location to spot Guishan Island in the distance and to watch the breaking dawn in Taiwan. At 4am on a clear day, the golden hued rays of sunrise softly caress the horizon and bleed like fire over the ocean — every single second is a marvel itself.
Here, in the easternmost cape of Taiwan sits a 16.5-meter-tall pristine white lighthouse — Sandiao Cape Lighthouse, also know as the “eye of Taiwan.” The tower is 16.5 meters high, and its white and red light flashes twice every 28 seconds. The light is visible to 25 nautical miles. It is the one and only lighthouse in northern Taiwan that is open to the public, where visitors get to have a closer look at the equipments and into its history in the exhibition room.
The Kuroshio (the world's second largest warm current after the Gulf stream in the Atlantic Ocean) runs off the eastside of Sandiao Cape and therefore brings shoals of migratory fish to the waters in the area. With the cape serving as a barrier inland, algae and plankton are large in number here, which accordingly creates a vibrant fish population.
