This particular temple may at first seem a bit secluded along a quiet portion of a Maokong's mountain road, but the views it affords are unparalleled in the area. Zhangshan Temple pays homage to Guanyin, a goddess associated with the Buddhist faith. The rich ornamentation belies the quiet solemnity of the premises. Like many of Taiwan's Buddhist mountain retreats, mind, body, and spirit should be at peace here and one glance upon a silent, smiling monk will convince you of this simple truth.
If the burning incense and sounds of nature don't pacify you immediately, surely the awe-inspiring vista will. An overhanging balcony rests precariously over the mountain ravine, allowing for a picture perfect shot of Taipei 101 and surrounding Xinyi District.
For the adventurous, Zhangshan Temple also serves as the entry point for three separate trails, including the Chengchi University trail which drops you right in the heart of the campus.
