Located in the Shimen District of New Taipei City, the Lovers’ Temple venerates Kurukulla, the Buddhist goddess of love and sex, corresponding to the Western goddesses Aphrodite and Venus. On both sides of the temples are two century-old trees intertwining with each other, hence the name “Couple Trees.” At most temples dedicated to love in Taiwan, couples are usually forbidden to worship together, while at this incense-choked Lovers’ Temple, lovebirds always come in abundance for some unknown reason.
Tibetan Buddhist practices are a bit different from what we know about other Buddhist paths. Here, you can’t just have a tour around the temple without worshipping the deity. Simply lifting your hands in worship without offerings, Joss papers and red incense sticks is not allowed. Fuji Fishing Harbor is right below the temple, which can be easily accessed by car or bus; parking is limited though. If you decide to go by bus, enjoy the view outside your window until you reach Fugueijiao Lighthouse and follow the signs to find the temple. The temple is still eight hundred meters away from the bus stop, so you may also give them a call in advance asking if they could pick you up from there.
