During the Qing dynasty, some railroad construction workers found in specks of gold in Keelung River, which triggered a gold rush. In 1893, a farmer found a huge outcrop of gold, and it was the very beginning of the golden days in Jinguashi (literally “pumpkin rock”). Back at that time, the mountain where gold was discovered born a striking resemblance to a pumpkin, hence the name. After a century of mining, its appearance has changed over time. Today, it looks more like a hippo sitting on the mountaintop and is therefore known as “the ore deposit of a hippo.”
