Established in 2000, the 99 Peak Nature Reserve is home to 99 individual peaks known for their badland formations, and there is a hiking trail situated within the Caotun Township of Nantou for visitors to explore the magnificence and splendor of these badlands. It is an easily accessible and well-beaten trail in the middle of a vibrant forest leading to a lookout that offers an amazing view of the distant towns such as Wufeng, Wuxi, Pinglin and Shuangdongli.
Consisting of boardwalks, industrial roads and paths of gravel, this 1930-meter-long trail will take you about an hour to complete a round trip. Much of the trail is not shaded, so a panoramic view will be granted without any obstructions. The steep valleys, exposed laterites and exceptionally sparse plant life all together make 99 Peaks even more like a lost world. Species that are endangered or native to Taiwan can also be found here, including Formosan rock monkeys, Formosan serows, Crested honey buzzards and Swinhoe's Pheasants.
