If you want to deeply understand the local culture of the place you are visiting, you have to visit its traditional market. Matsu is no different, you absolutely must come to its Shizi Market in Jieshou Township (介壽)! This is a two story traditional market for which 8 o’clock in the morning is the best time of all to visit. On the first floor you can find clothes, fruit, seafood and meat. On the second floor, local small foods and dry goods are the most popular among tourists. The biggest difference between Shizi Market and local markets in Taiwan is that most of the small foods and dry goods on sale here are from Fuzhou in China. For example, Amei’s Restaurant (阿妹的店) signature dish, which is much-loved by tourists, is Din-Bian-Hu (鼎邊糊), which has a Fuzhou flavor, and is definitely as good as Keelung Market’s Din-Bian-Tsou (鐤邊銼). In addition, local people are used to speaking Fuzhounese here, which is very different from Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka language. But don’t worry - you can still speak Mandarin, the locals will understand! Why not choose a morning to wander down and eat a Fuzhou flavored breakfast at Shizi Market?
