Matsu Village is called Magang (馬港) by local residents. Located on the west coast of Nangang Island (南竿島), it used to be a docking harbor of warships and the biggest village on the west coast of Matsu. Officers and soldiers used to come here frequently, bringing prosperity to Matsu Village with their presence. The beautiful Matsu Mazu Temple (馬祖境天后宮) is located next to the harbor, contrasting the warship that remains docked there even today. The temple, which gives those who visit it a sense of peace, is juxtaposed by solemn military facilities, making it a very interesting scene indeed. Next to the Matsu Mazu Temple, there is the Sword of Matsu Monument (馬祖劍碑), which is a landmark that tourists absolutely have to visit. After the Fuao Harbor (福澳港) began to be used on Nangan, it replaced the function of Magang for transport, transforming Matsu Village into a little tourist town. Besides Matsu Mazu Temple and the Sword of Matsu Monument, the stately Giant Statue of Mazu (馬祖巨神像) stands behind Magang on Menqian Mountain (門前山). The shopping district in Matsu Village is a good place for buying souvenirs, not to mention famous sorghum wine. You might like to try a Jiguang biscuit (繼光餅), a donut-like snack which soldiers used to eat out of hunger, sprinkled with sesame seeds instead of sugar. The first bite is quite chewy and the flavor will remain in your teeth. Isn’t it a quaint, rustic taste though?
