Matsu Folk Culture Museum

Matsu Folk Culture Museum is a place that lets you really come to know Matsu. Located in the center of Nangan Island (南竿島) next to Jieshou Park (介壽公園), the current cultural museum was renovated in 2002 and contains all the characteristics of eastern Hokkien style architecture. The basement and four floors introduce geology, ecology, archaeology, history, architecture, fishing culture, and folk culture, including weddings and funerals. Every section is impressive, but perhaps the most interesting of them all is that which details the construction methods related to Hokkien architecture. This section not only gives you a deeper understanding of Matsu, but, even more so, the opportunity to compare southern Hokkien culture, very common on the island of Taiwan, with eastern Hokkien culture. Even though the two share many similarities, you can see many differences in detail. If you are someone who is interested in Hokkien culture, then the Matsu Folk Culture Museum is a good place to gather information. Because the exhibition is indoors, it is an especially good choice for a visit on a hot summer afternoon or a rainy day.
