Dongyin Lighthouse is undoubtedly the most striking landmark on Dongyin Island. Also known as Dongyong Lighthouse (東湧燈塔), it is located in the east of the island, on the edge of a cliff on Shiwei Mountain (世尾山) overlooking the East China Sea. If you are looking up at it from below, the lighthouse looks like an emperor dominating the terrain. If you are standing above it you can enjoy the view of it nestled between the cliffs and sea. And if you love photography just like us, you might like to come here before dawn to await the sunrise.
Because there are many reefs nearby, shipwrecks used to be frequent, finally prompting the construction of the lighthouse during the late Qing dynasty. Now it the most northern Class Three National Historical Site listed in Taiwan. The lighthouse used to be categorized as a restricted area in the past, so lighthouse keepers needed to resettle their whole family here to take up their responsibilities. Therefore, piggeries and chicken coops contributed to an entirely self-sufficient lifestyle. During past times of scarce resources, the lighthouse keeper’s environment was envied by the other islanders and was nicknamed “Dongyin Villa” (東引別墅). Walking through the entrance to the lighthouse, you will pass the Leigu Rock (擂鼓石) before arriving at a platform where you can listen to the sound of the waves and see the impressive cliffs. Following the boardwalk downwards, you will find a bunker, canons and fog lights. If you walk upwards, you will pass the main body of the white lighthouse and the dormitories, and, if you keep walking, can cross Shiwei Mountain and head back to the Martyred Woman Pit (烈女義坑) near the entrance of the lighthouse. This is the recommended route.
