Wudao City God Temple

Having been serving as a center of faith among locals for more than three hundred years, Wudao City God Temple venerates the tutelary deity who protects the local people and the affairs of Kinmen — Chenghuang God, also known as City God.

The City God Reception Parade falls on the 12th day of the fourth lunar month, and it is the most celebrated temple fair of the island. Almost every resident participates in City God’s annual inspection tour of city. On the day of the event, the statue of City God will be carried around to patrol the island. The entire ceremony is usually a lively scene, where lion dance troupes will be performing dance formations together with many other celebrations. Every street is filled with a large congregation of local devout worshippers — this is how local people show their devotion to the City God and meanwhile bond with other residents of the island.

The parade has been a lively local folk tradition since the late Qing dynasty. Once the most militarized zone on earth, Kinmen has never been influenced by foreign cultures and there gets to preserve its traditional ceremonies and parade formations. Pay a visit to Wudao City God Temple during the parade, and you will be granted the most complete picture of Minnan culture.
