Since Kinman is close to the Southern Ocean (the region of Southeast Asia) with easy access to the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and more, a lot of people originated from Kinmen would return to their homeland building up new houses after striking it rich with their business overseas. This well demonstrates their gratitude to their homeland of Kinmen. Besides, the unaccustomed architectural styles and ornaments were brought along as well, which is why the architectures in Kinmen incorporate Minnan, Western, Southeast Asian styles and wartime designs, very distinctive in their own way.
Take Jinshui Elementary School as an example. The architecture itself is mix of traditional Chinese and western-influenced styles. The Baroque-style gable with carvings of western elements such as angels and the letter “A” can be seen by the entrance. Upon entering the school, you will greeted by a typical layout and other fixtures of traditional Chinese architecture. The place is also said to be the best spot for pre-wedding photoshoot in Kinmen.
Having been abandoned for years, Jinshui Elementary School is now converted into a museum of Kinmen history, where the stories of overseas Kinmen compatriots are told. The admission to the museum is free, but keep the opening hours in mind though.
