Banpingshan

Banpingshan, situated nearby Xinzuoying Station (新左營車站) and Zuoying High Speed Rail Station (左營高鐵站) belongs to the Shoushan National Nature Park (壽山國家自然公園區). Wandering along the trail on the mountain, you can see Lotus Lake (蓮池潭), the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔) and the Kaohsiung Confucius Temple (高雄孔廟) in the distance. Then, if you ascend higher, you can even see Kaohsiung Port with its many ships parked in the dock below. Looking over at the other side of the city, the Kaohsiung National Stadium (世運館) is not far away. In fact, in the past, this mountain was a military base such that, even today, you can still see some abandoned military tunnels and bunkers at the foot of the mountain, as well as a combat-ready water tank.

Generally speaking, the trail is quite good walking, with only a few sections in the middle that don’t have steps where you need to walk on the gravel, which can be a little harder. As well as the city views as you walk along, you might also see the diverse butterflies and birds which make this their haunt. In the open pavilion on top of the hill, you might find some nearby residents are here enjoying the scenery, drinking tea, and chatting. Some are even practicing Tai Chi. Stop by to share in some tea and chatter with the local people of Kaohsiung.
