Stone Sculpturing Museum

Attraction stories

Hualien’s location at the boundary of two tectonic plates – the Eurasian Plate (歐亞大陸板塊) and the Philippine Sea Plate (菲律賓海板塊), makes it a valuable mineral deposit. It is home to more than 90% of the stone resources in Taiwan, and marble is especially popular in the area. Hualien is therefore recognized as the hometown of stone and the city of marble. Located in the city of Hualien, the Stone Sculpturing Museum is the very first museum dedicated to stone carving in Taiwan.

The Stone Sculpturing Museum is divided into two major sections, where traditional stone sculptures preserved from the Ming and Qing dynasties until the mid 19th century as well as modern stone sculptures created by local sculptors are on display. You will even find rose stones and Taiwanese jade that are unique in Hualien.

Established in 2001, the Stone Sculpturing Museum strives to engage visitors in learning experiences to enhance their curiosity and interest in stone carving art. Stone carving festivals are held regularly, where artists from home and abroad will be invited to display their creativity and imagination and help promote the local carving tradition to an international audience.
