Brown Avenue (Bolang Dadao), located in Chishang Township, Taitung, is one of Taiwan’s most iconic scenic routes, often referred to as a "Green Road to Paradise." This narrow country path cuts through a vast expanse of rice paddies in the East Rift Valley, offering a breathtaking landscape framed by the majestic Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range. What makes this road truly unique is the complete absence of utility poles, allowing for an unobstructed, panoramic view of the rolling fields that change color from vibrant emerald green in the spring to shimmering gold during the harvest seasons in June and November.
The road gained international fame after being featured in Mr. Brown Coffee commercials and later in an EVA Air advertisement starring the legendary actor Takeshi Kaneshiro. The simple act of the actor sipping tea under an autumn maple tree transformed that specific spot into the world-famous "Takeshi Kaneshiro Tree," which remains a must-visit landmark for travelers. Nearby, the "Paradise Road" (Tiantang Lu) offers a contrasting beauty with its elegant, winding curves that seem to disappear into the mountains, providing a more poetic and fluid perspective of the Chishang countryside.
To preserve the tranquility and ecological integrity of the area, motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited. The best way to experience Brown Avenue is by renting a bicycle or an electric tandem bike from the nearby rental stations. Cycling through the fields allows you to feel the gentle valley breeze and smell the sweet fragrance of ripening rice. For the best experience, it is recommended to visit during the early morning or late afternoon to catch the soft "golden hour" light, which creates a magical atmosphere perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
