Shuilian Cave

Located in the Emei Township of Hsinchu, the Lion’s Head Scenic Area is home to a significant number of historic temples and natural wonders such Shuilian Cave (Water Curtain Cave). The sheet of spring water dripping from the top of the cave’s high mouth is what gives it its name. Sitting by the cave is the small Fanyin Temple, venerating Gautama Buddha and Guanshiyin Buddha, with the soothing sound of the flowing river acting as the constant Sanskrit chanting in your ears.

With the total length of 250 meters, the trail of Shuilian Cave is quite an inviting place to be. Hiking along the stream, you will be amazed by the crystal-clear silver water strewn with Taiwan shovel-jaw carps endemic to Taiwan. Soon you will then reach the trail of Shuilian Bridge, which is about 500 meters long and lined with shady trees to make it easy to hike under the scorching Taiwanese sun. The century-old Shuilian Bridge was built from stone blocks mixed with glutinous rice, dark brown sugar and lime — it is a very ancient way of building bridges and the Shuilian Bridge therefore becomes a significant landmark. The trail is pretty much for everyone regardless of age, but if you are keen on a more challenging experience, Yuanshan Trail and Tengping Trail in the vicinity won’t disappoint.
