Lidongshan

You might have heard of a list of the 100 iconic peaks soaring over 3,000 meters in Taiwan, and many local enthusiasts spend their whole lives trying to climb over every one of them. However, not every one of us is physically capable of going out on a serious hike, which is why there is another list of the 100 minor peaks for everyone regardless of age, and Lidongshan at an altitude of 1,914 meters happens to be one of them.

The entrance to the mountain is at the altitude of around 1,500 meters, so all you need to reach the top is an easy walking that can be achieved by everyone. The ruins of the castle on top, whose outer walls are still riddled with bullet holes, serves as a sobering reminder of the battles that once happened here between the aboriginal people and the Japanese army.

Lidong Villa at the entrance to the mountain is a private property, which was planned to be be a guesthouse for hikers. However, as the owner came to an age of retirement, he left the villa unkept and uncared for, making it look like a shabby castle ruin in the middle of nowhere. Today, it still serves a purpose though: every hiker could pay a donation of TWD10 to have access to bathrooms and drinking water before continuing their hike to the top of the mountain. The trail is very well marked. It is of rutted gravel but the hike can still be quite pleasant. A round trip will take you about three hours. When you return to the villa, the owner will be there, kindly offering tea to all hikers. A good chat over a cup of tea with other like-minded hikers will put a lovely end to your adventure to Lidongshan.
