Located in the Renai Township of Nantou, Bi Lake (literally “jade lake”) is a hidden paradise surrounded by lush mountains of central Taiwan. It is also known as Wushe (霧社) or Wanda (萬大) Reservoir. As the shimmering water reflects the surrounding mountains like a huge mirror, the lake takes on a spectacular jade green color, hence the name.

Driving along the winding Provincial Highway 14 towards Cingjing Farm, you will surely spot this alpine lake peeking through a lush bit of greenery. It is shrouded in a mist of magic all year round and boasts diverse landscapes that change through the four seasons. In spring, the fascinating cherry blossoms will greet you from all directions and take your breath away. In proximity of Cingjing Farm, Bi Lake is for sure not to be missed if you are planning a beautiful day out in the heart of Taiwan. If you are looking for some great views and food, Tarowan (塔洛灣) serves up the aromatic “urn chicken” (a whole chicken roasted in a barrel) and is the best location to appreciate the serene beauty of Bi Lake.

However, the area has experienced severe drought in recent years, causing the water level to drop lower and lower. Being used to balance the flow by releasing water to Sun Moon Lake, Bi Lake itself often dries out, exposing the sediments that lie down below – it is not always that green anymore. Even climate change has brought negative impacts to Bi Lake, who is expected to fill with sediment by the year 2059.
