When traveling Taiwan, the first site that comes to mind when arriving Chiayi is perhaps the Alishan National Scenic Area. For gourmands who are interested in tea visiting the Alishan, which is famous for its oolong tea and green tea, is the only way to go. But for people who are just looking to enjoy tea and a peaceful time, there is an ancient Chinese style tea house in downtown Chiayi that only a few people are familiar with - the Zhuju Tea House. Similar to Wuwei Tea House in Taichung, Zhuju tea houses are centered around a pond, with tatami (a type of weaved bamboo mat, which is used for floor material in Japan) rooms, private rooms, and round tables. The interior is decorated with Chinese wooden windows, Chinese ink, and wash paintings, these created an atmosphere that allow everyone to feel a sense of “Zen” and poetic while enjoying a pot of tea and some snacks. Aside from various types of tea, the Zhuju Tea House also serves Hong Kong style dim sums which are suitable for late night snacks; Taiwanese style desserts for the afternoon tea time; and Chinese style cuisines to enjoy with a couple of your friends. Although you might need a reservation on the weekends, due to the low population of Chiayi City, you may find yourselves the only table on weekdays.
